Autumn Activities

Fall is the perfect time for leisurely activities and exploring. The fresh air and glowing colours of falling leaves makes being outdoors truly enjoyable.

Hiking and Biking: with the fresh air and cooler temperatures, taking a long stroll, hiking or bike riding are great ways to get some exercise while enjoying the sounds and colours of fall. Plan a day trip somewhere on local trails, or out on country roads and pack a picnic!
Wine Tours: Fall is a great time to explore vinyards and sample the often overlooked late-harvest wines. It is the perfect excuse to get out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while learning about harvesting grapes. Check into the vinyards near you to see if there are any events planned for the season.
Trips to the country: If you live in the city it is imperative that you put aside a day this fall to take a trip into the country. You will find yourself surrounded by vivid autumn colours, fresh air, and plenty of palces to explore. Visit markets selling flowers and farm-fresh fruits and vegetables. Closer to Halloween, take the kids to the country to find the perfect pumkin. Often, you will find places that have a great selection of pumkins in all sizes as well as hay rides and hot apple cider.

Autumn Crafts

Here are some easy and fun crafts to get you started preparing for Autumn!

Hand print Wreath
Supplies Needed:
Yellow, Orange, red and brown construction paper.
White Glue
Saftey scissors
Pencil
Stickers,glitter, leaves.

Directions
There are two ways to do this craft. One is to trace the child's hand onto paper and cut out the prints. The second is to make paint handprints on the paper and cut those out. If are going to make prints then you will also need paint. Use a finger paint or non-tosic tempera paint.

Make twelve handprints (3 of each colour). Cut out the prints and glue to form a wreath. You can decorate the wreath further with pictures (like leaves, stickers, glitter and the like).

A Leafy Garland
Supplies Needed:
Construction paper (orange, red, yellow, brown, and other earth tones)
Crayons or markers
Scissors
Glue, tape, or staples
A long piece of green or brown yarn or string

Directions

Draw a leaf on a piece of construction paper. Make sure to draw a thick stem on the top (your leaf will hang from this stem, which will be folded over). If you'd like, use a leaf template. Leave an extra long stem on the leaf.
Cut out the leaf. Draw the leaf veins if you wish. Fold the leaf's stem in half over the yarn and staple.
Attach the leaf to a long string using tape, glue, or staples. Make more leaves and attach them to the string.

Pumpkin Seeds
Supplies Needed :
Pumpkin Spoon
Cookie tray

Directions:

Although not really a craft this is one of the best things about Autumn. And it makes nice use of the seeds from the jack-o-lantern's everyone has at Halloween. After all the pumpkin carving or pie making, don't throw out the seeds. Separate the seeds from the stringy pulp (don't rinse or remove every last bit of the pulp -- the pulp adds flavor). Place the seeds on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with a of salt (sea salt is best) and then bake in a 350 degree oven for ten minutes until lightly browned. Enjoy!
