Easter Egg Decorating

With the egg being a symbol of life or the renewal of life, the egg became a prominent figure in Easter or springtime celebrations throughout history and cultures. Egg decorating has been observed in many different cultures as well. The most common symbolism behind this tradition is that the bright colours used to decorate the eggs are to commemorate the spring season and hence, the renewal of life.

Egg Rolling

In some countries, like England and Germany , kids roll eggs down hills on Easter morning with the winner being the one who can roll their egg the furthest without breaking. This game is symbolic of the rock being rolled away from Jesus' tomb when he was resurrected. Even the President gets in on the Easter fun. At the White House in Washington , DC , kids under 12 get to roll hard-boiled eggs down the hilly lawn.

Egg Hunt

Long ago, in Europe , eggs were sought out in the forests because they were a symbol of good fortune. It is likely that this search through the woods for real bird's eggs ended up as a game where painted eggs were searched out instead incorporating the symbolic beliefs of the egg from many different cultures.
